Thanks for the description, Wendy! I’m glad you went and glad it was before this last weekend. I did not plan on going, for the exact reason that I am always hesitant about attending any event with large groups of people and somewhat lax security.

The lax security is no joke. We actually commented how stupid the bag check was once we got through the checkpoint. I had a backpack with a large middle compartment and numerous side pockets. They half-ass wanded the center of my bag, but never checked the sides, where I had two Gatorade bottles. I realize if they were trying to detect metal, they may have found something if I was carrying it. But still, I could have had all kinds of weapons, things smaller than those bottles -- and apparently this guy on Saturday was able to have at least one -- because security was pointless.

I was acutely aware how close we were to the perimeter of the designated viewing area for fireworks last July 4th, because of recent violence caused by people using their vehicles as weapons.

It's sad these things happen so much we've learn to adapt to them. Or at least be conscious of them.

Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

This morning they had the security guy on the news and he said their scanner is designed to find large metal objects and that it should definitely have detected the weapon, implying that the guy got it in some other way.

Where there's a will, there's a way.....which circles this back around to the why of needing it in the first place. Lots to unpack.

This was enjoyable Wendy. I am a Fair Guy from way back. My Mom hated the Fair but soldiered through in WNY. We were semi-regular at the County Fair. In the time since I have enjoyed State Fairs all over. Despite visiting a lot I have not experienced the Texas State Fair yet. Since I know it is kinda close to Dallas, maybe sometime soon. In the meantime our State Fair is an awesome event and I can't resist checking the box every year. As for the Questions

#1 Lotsa times, worst State Fair experience was in California. We lived in a coastal community and it was truly perfect weather all year around. However, California being such a SPRAWLING state, they had 3 State Fairs. We left our coastal home (no AC required) and drove over the mountains about 35 miles to the Fair. The temperature when we left was in the low 70s. The Fair was in the low 100s. Every other memory of Fairs is A1

#3 No. I hope the fascination with guns I have noted in so many areas of this country can be resisted as the dumbest of exports from the lovers to our current home.
